Best tasting free run chicken...Grazer Chickens!

After four years of raising Cornish Giants (the standard meat birds) and watching them struggle through their short , miserable lives, we decided we could no longer in good conscience continue to raise them.  Although the birds were tasty, we felt something was lacking in the flavour.  They were also bred to gain weight at an unnatural pace.  Their hearts would explode, skin would split, feathers fell out and legs were crippled.  To add to it all they were stupid and lacking instincts all chickens should have.
So now we have switched to a Grazer chicken from Bergs Hatchery.  It has been compared to what the Cornish Giant was in the 70's and 80's, before they were over-bred.  The Grazers are phenomenal!
From start to finish they were an amazing bird.  They were healthy, happy and a pleasure to raise.  The flavour is everything we had hoped it would be and more!

The way a chicken should be!

Why does our corn taste so good?

8/20/2015

I have been asked by several customers why our corn tastes so good.  We have been told by everyone who has eaten our corn that it is the best they have ever had!
There are a number of reasons I can give you.   First, it is picked fresh, several times a day.  Second, it is cooled quickly and kept refrigerated (which slows the natural process of the sugar turning to starch).  Third, it is grown organically, so it doesn't have any chemical residue.  Fourth, it is hand picked when it is at its prime by Rick (who is a perfectionist).  Fifth, we choose the variety of corn we grow for optimum flavour.
I could go on with more reasons as to why our corn is awesome, or you could come check it out for yourself.  It's only $9.00/doz...while the season lasts.

Organically Grown Strawberries

7/1/2015

Rick began to experiment growing strawberries organically to see if it is a worthwhile venture (not certified organic).  It's been a couple years of growing them on a small scale and we've learnt a few tricks already. The geese did a wonderful job of weeding the strawberry beds this spring.  Then with some nicely timed rains and a bit of irrigating, the strawberries ripened and are now ready to pick.  I am sure there will be more learning to do, but for now we will enjoy the fruits of our labour!
They are $18 a pail.  Pre-picked only.  Limited supply.

It doesn't feel like summer until you eat those first new potatoes and munch on a few peas fresh out of the garden.  I'm happy to say that summer is here!  It's easy to eat good this time of the year!
We also have fresh smoked sausage..."Country Garlic", yet another new recipe that Rick is trying.  It's our new favorite.  Let us know how you like it.

Free Range Eggs

Exciting News!!! We can now legally keep more than 99 laying hens. The limit has been raised to 300! Our 200 free range laying hens are no longer under the threat of execution. Thank you Manitoba Egg Farmers!
Our laying hens have always had a good life.  They are happy to roam around the yard...even in my flower beds.  They produce the best tasting, free run eggs.   We have a strong following of egg buyers, some making special trips out from Winnipeg.  During the summer months, when the Lac du Bonnet cottage traffic is at it's busiest, we sell out daily.  Now that the limit has been raised, we can look into expanding our flock and building a new chicken barn.

Planting the fields...is it too early for corn???

For the last few years Rick has grown the earliest corn in Manitoba (he also believes it is the sweetest and best tasting, but that is harder to prove).  Our first batch of corn is now out in the field.  It is safely protected by row covers, but a little sunshine would help.

Spring on the farm...

4/24/2015

Spring is here again and with it comes a new season of fun and excitement!  We have been busy in the greenhouse for a couple months already and now it is starting to green up quite nicely. Not to mention we have been eating fresh lettuce for a few weeks.  It's one of the perks of having a greenhouse!
We've already got baby piglets running around.  Now we are waiting to see how many of the birds will hatch their eggs.  I've got goose, duck and turkey eggs in the incubator and one of the ducks is already sitting on a nest.  Unfortunately she chose the top of the pile of hay bales for her nest...we'll see how she plans to get her ducklings down.
The last few cold days did not harm the plants we had already put out in the field.  We are still looking forward to early peas, potatoes, radishes and lettuce.
Hope you are all enjoying the beautiful weather.  I've already had a lot of weekend traffic stopping by  looking for their farm fresh vegetables...sorry, you'll have to wait just a little longer. Not too long now until the asparagus and fiddleheads will be ready.  I'll let you know!

Local Creamed Honey

Better late than never!
Customers have been asking us all summer and fall for honey, but the boy who had been selling his honey through us is no longer doing it.  Luckily another neighbour bought his equipment and will continue to supply us with honey.  He is creaming it as well, which is something a lot of you were asking for.
So now we have honey on the shelves and should have a good supply for next year as well!
